The Benefits of Exercise for New Mums.

We all know exercise is good for us, from the days we were kids ourselves we were ushered outside and told ‘you’ll feel better once you’ve been outside and had some fresh air’!

At Fit For Life, we aim to build all of our sessions around the fact that exercise (no matter the intensity) is a great way to help you:

  1. Boost your mood and have an outlet to help your mental health;

  2. Supercharge those energy levels with endorphins

  3. Get your body moving and enhance your physical recovery;

  4. Build social connections with the local community (this is especially important for Mums and Bubs sessions!);

  5. Get that amazing level of sleep quality.

We feel like you may have already known all of that so let’s get straight into what our Mums and Bubs sessions are all about next!

What Are Mums and Bubs Gym Classes?

With the bones of why we run sessions at Fit For Life out of the way, let’s talk a bit more about our mums and bubs gym sessions and how we design the group fitness sessions to cater to new mothers.

Our Mums and Bubs sessions provide a safe, supportive, and fun environment for mums to get back into exercise.

Our in-studio creche (run by our very own child-care worker Jess) keeps your little one entertained with activities, games, and socialising throughout each of our mums and bubs sessions. This means you can focus on being present and working out!

Do you tailor exercises to my level of fitness?

You bet we do! We have got a range of different sessions we run (more on that below) and we’re on hand to guide you through each step of the way providing alternatives, variations, and encouragement.

You’re definitely not alone in any of our sessions and we’ll make sure you’ve got the support you need. We do however recommend that you reach out to Loz to discuss any variations or challenges you might have so we can plan ahead for you!

Choosing the Right Mums and Bubs Gym Class

Before you head into and attend our mums and bubs gym classes, we want to give you all the information about the types of sessions we offer!

We have put a bit more information on each of the types of sessions we run for you down below to help you choose which sessions suit your exercise goals:

  1. HIIT FIT: We call the HIIT group fitness sessions ‘HIIT FIT’ and, you’ll find that this type of training involves short bursts of intense effort followed by short and sharp rest periods - think 60 seconds on and 10 seconds to move to the next station before going for 60 seconds again. It’s your classic HIIT session with our little Fit For Life twist!

  2. LIFT FIT: Okay, these re our professionally designed weights group sessions will take your fitness to the next level! LIFT FIT will leave you with stronger muscles and a more developed core and is the perfect program to get you back moving after some time out of the gym!

If you have any questions or would like to learn more about how our Hybrid sessions blend LIFT FIT and HIIT FIT, feel free to reach out to Loz via email to ask any questions you may have!

Preparing for Your First Mums and Bubs Gym Session

We want you to have an amazing experience when you’re in the studio and to help you do that, we have put together a short checklist to help you get the most out of each and every session from day 1!

With that in mind, to make the most of your mums and bubs gym sessions, we would suggest that you keep these tips in mind:

  1. Get clearance from your doctor and/or healthcare provider: It is always best practice to touch base with and consult your doctor before kicking off any new exercise program. They’ll be able to give you the all clear to ensure it's safe for you to return to movement!

  2. Dress comfortably: This one seems relatively self explanatory however as you progress and begin to really push yourself things will get hot and sweaty so be sure to wear comfortable, breathable clothing that allows for easy movement! A change of clothes isn’t a bad idea as you can change in the studio change rooms after the session.

  3. Bring essentials: We have storage cubes for your gym and baby essentials! So don’t be afraid to bring a bag with the usual suspects like wipes, nappies, snacks, a change of clothes to name a few. We have plenty of space so don’t feel like you can’t bring what you or bub needs!

  4. Stay hydrated: We can’t reinforce this one enough, it is one of the most important items to keep across as without proper hydration you’ll feel sluggish and likely be left with a headache! We know you haven’t got time for that so pack that water bottle to stay hydrated during and after your workout.

  5. Listen to your body: This one is always the most important for a return to exercise. We suggest that you always pay attention to the signals your body is giving you and that you work with us during the session to modify exercises as needed.

The Social Benefits of Mums and Bubs Gym Classes

By now you’re well and truly across what the Fit For Life mums and bubs sessions are about, how we operate, and what to expect. However, the often unwritten benefit that pops up time and time again through our group of fantastic mums is the social benefit that comes from being a part of our mums and bubs crew.

Our mums and bubs sessions provide welcoming and friendly opportunities for new mums, mums of toddlers to mums of not-so-small kiddies to connect with other mothers.

We are proud that our trainers and clients make the environment:

  1. Supportive and encouraging.

  2. Built on lasting friendships.

  3. Positive, and Fun.

  4. Collegiate and built on a sense of community.

Between Sessions: Incorporating Exercise into Your Daily Routine

We know you’ll love our mums and bubs group fitness sessions and all they have to offer! But we love to see you and our Fit For Life crew stay active and keep a flexible approach to fitness outside of the studio too.

While our classes offer a structured ‘time-and-place’ approach to helping you get active, stay fit, and keep you accountable, there are plenty of ways we love to see our mums and bubs crew incorporate exercise into their daily routine:

  1. Walking or Jogging: let’s start with the simple pleasures! A simple walk or jog around your neighborhood will help your body recover after a session and help keep you flexible. If you’re looking for a workout, and your stroller is built for it, a jog-walk with bub in the stroller is a great way to get the blood pumping.

  2. Home Workouts: sometimes sleep schedules, rough nights or mum life means getting to the studio for a class is not always possible. Not to worry – jump on our zoom sessions and join in from home and you’ll have Loz directing you one on one and keeping an eye on you on screen from the studio!

  3. Fit For Life Run Club: Can’t commit to a full hour of intensity? Want to try a guided return to running? Why not give our Saturday Morning Run Club a shot, it’s small group run training with one of our trainers and you’re able to set the pace and run to your level of comfort!

  4. Stretch and Unwind: Finding time for you is not an easy feat, so if you can find 15 - 20 minutes to get stretching, focus on your breathing and into some gentle movement. Much like the easy walk suggestion, your body will be loose, limber, and ready to tackle whatever comes at you!

With quite a bit about what our sessions are, how we operate, and what to do outside of the studio we wanted to leave you with some important insights on goal setting, so let’s jump into that before wrapping up!

Setting Tiered Fitness Goals

As a new mum, it's important to set fitness goals that account for the changes your body has experienced and the demands of having a bub. We all know fitness progression, even when we’re at our fittest, is not a pretty upward diagonal line it’s always a wave with ups, downs, and plateaus.

With that in mind, we have three quick tips that we encourage all our Fit For Life family to focus on when working towards the goals they set with us!

  1. Focus on consistency: We’ve seen fads, crazes, flares and bangs come and go and the one thing we’ve learned is starting slow and keeping consistent is the most important thing to bet right when you’re trying to bed in a new exercise routine.

  2. Mold exercise to your life: The thing we absolutely adore about exercise is that it takes so many different forms as we’ve touched on above – if you can make it to the studio AMAZING, if bub is sleeping and you need to jump on Zoom we’re totally okay with that and if you just need to get a walk in to recover, we hear you! So make exercise suit your needs and build it into your life in a way that fits into your new life as a mum.

  3. Be patient: Nobody likes regressing even a little! We’re here to cut you some major slack, your body will take time to remember what it used to do and that’s okay! Our experience has shown us often once consistency is established the results start to kick in well and good.

  4. Celebrate small victories: We love celebrating with you so we’re big on acknowledging how far you’ve come and not solely focusing on how far you’ve got to go. While the changes and progress may seem small to you, they are most certainly worth celebrating and often those initial small steps are the most important ones that build the long-term, rock-solid habit.

So our takeaway, from this section of this article is to recognize that your fitness level will get there, and embrace the journey without putting excessive pressure on yourself.

With that you’re across all there is to know about Fit For Life Mums and Bubs gym classes.
